 Alfred G. Montna
Alfred (Al) G.
Montna is a distinguished member of the Board of Directors of Levee District One. His personal biography follows:
Al (as he is called) bears the full name of Alfred G. Montna. He has served on the Levee District One
Board of Directors for a period of three years. By profession, Al is a farmer and the owner of Montna Farms, which is
a rice farm. Al is married to Gail E. Montna. Together, they have two married daughters and six grandchildren.
By Al's account, his greatest professional accomplishment is as follows:
The rice industry was under siege in the 1980s because of air and water quality issues. We were being targeted by the American
Lung Association and were close to being put out of business by legislation. There was a need to build bridges and reach a common ground. I value
the opportunity I had to have a part in achieving change in the practices of the rice industry by working to phase down burning
of rice stubble, reducing pesticide runoff into the Sacramento River by 90 percent and seeing hundreds of thousands of acres created as seasonal wetland for
waterfowl, shorebirds, and wildlife. The rice industry became the 'poster child' for environmental stewardship in agriculture.
This stewardship compelled me to work blending together my love of agriculture and wildlife. I pursued the challenge
of creating something more enduring, which would keep the land in agriculture and as a seasonal wetland in perpetuity.
Working with Ducks Unlimited and their conservation program, we were able to put in place the firstever
wildlifefriendly agriculture easement in California. This joint venture helps to ensure that there is land that will never be taken out of farming
and will always be managed to benefit wildlife. With a love for the land, there is a great satisfaction in knowing
the land will remain agricultural and not be subdivided and developed. The creation of seasonal wetlands is a legacy
for family and individuals who share a love of waterfowl and wildlife.
